Chart of the Week: Wet January drives fastest internet sales growth since Covid

Retail sales grew way ahead of consensus expectations in January, but the online sales trends were also eye-catching

Figures out last week from the ONS showed that seasonally adjusted retail sales volumes grew by 1.8% in January 2026, a huge jump on the 0.4% in December anda consensus forecast of 0.2%. Explaining the rise, the ONS pointed to the relatively niche artwork and antique sector, as well as online jewellery sales.
