Asos has started taking orders again this morning after the clean-up of a warehouse fire that damaged 20% of stock at its Barnsley site.
The etailer held around 70% of its stock at the distribution centre, which as of May 31, was around £159m of stock at cost. Asos said it was “fully insured for loss of stock at business interruption”.
Meanwhile, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, which helped put out the blaze that broke out at around 9.50pm on Friday, are treating the incident as deliberate and have begun a criminal enquiry.
Asos said: “None of the technology, automation or structure of the building has been affected by the fire. Our initial estimate is that approximately 20% of the total stock at the site has been compromised by fire damage and the sprinkler systems. The clean-up process commenced on Saturday morning and progressed quickly. Consequently at 2am this morning we recommenced taking orders. “
Asos was forced to take its site down after the fire, which caused no injuries.
This is not the first time Asos has been impacted by a fire at its warehouse. Back in 2005 its distribution centre in Hemel Hempstead was damaged by explosions at the Buncefield fuel depot, which led to it closing for five weeks.
