Carpetright has appointed former Sainsbury’s director Darren Shapland to the board as an independent non-executive director.

Shapland was Sainsbury’s group development director until he stepped down from the board, and prior to that was chief financial officer. He remains chairman of Sainsbury’s Bank.

Prior to joining Sainsbury’s, Shapland was group finance director of Carpetright between 2002 and 2005, and before that was at Superdrug.

Lord Harris of Peckham, chairman and chief executive, said: “I am delighted that Darren has agreed to join Carpetright’s board as a non-executive director.  He was an outstanding finance director when he was with us before and his subsequent success at Sainsbury’s speaks for itself.”
