Waitrose has appointed the Post Office commercial director Martin George as its interim customer director, replacing Rupert Thomas.

Thomas was promoted to commercial director earlier this year.

George will sit on the board and look after all aspects of marketing and customer relations.

He arrives from the Post Office, where he spent three years as commercial director, a role he previously held at British Airways.

Prior to that he worked at Bupa and began his career at Cadbury.

He is chairman of sporting equipment specialist Grays of Cambridge and a non-executive director at London Doctors Clinic, Hornby Hobbies and Private Fly.

‘Invaluable asset’

Waitrose managing director Rob Collins said: “Martin brings a wealth of fantastic experience to our business and will be an invaluable asset both to the board and to Waitrose as a whole.”

The upmarket grocer is currently bidding to improve customer service while driving efficiencies by stripping out 180 store management roles across the business.

The move is designed to create what Waitrose calls a “whole shop” culture, rather than dividing teams into segregated departments like fresh, frozen and beers, wines and spirits.
