Supermarket to remove activists
Tesco won a high court order yesterday to remove environmental activists from woodland that the supermarket wants to fell to make way for a new store.

The protesters' leader, Oliver Carter, had been living in a tree house in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, for 11 days.

The planned supermarket and homes have planning permission, but Carter claims he is supported by some residents.

Carter sought an adjournment yesterday, saying he had first heard about the hearing on Tuesday evening. But the judge said legal notices had been on the site since Friday.

A Tesco spokesperson said: 'We have the support of the local council and the vast majority of local residents, many of whom have told us that the sooner the store is open the better. It will be for the town and the consumer.

'As a matter of detail, we will be planting a total of 207 trees, a significant number of which will be indigenous semi-mature species. This is 27 more trees than will be removed.'
