Next is set to close its warehouse in Bradford next September, putting 780 jobs at risk as part of plans to “expand its facility in South Elmsall” upon closure of the site.

The warehouse on Toftshaw Lane is expected to close by next autumn and Udsaw union is said to be in consultation talks with affected staff, according to the BBC.

The fashion giant said it anticipated “sufficient jobs” would be available for those impacted and who wish to relocate to another location.

Next said the move comes as part of a plan to “centralise its online operations” and improve stock availability.

The fashion retailer added that required roof repairs at its Bradford site would not be cost-effective and, as a result, expansion of its South Elmsall site would “lower its environmental impact by cutting the number of lorry journeys”.

Next warehousing and distribution director Claire Hopkins told the BBC: “This has not been an easy decision and we appreciate this announcement will be difficult for our team at Toftshaw.

“We would like to thank everyone in advance for their usual dedication and support as we work together to ensure as smooth a transition as possible, but also so that everyone on site receives the relevant help and assistance in finding alternative employment.”

Usdaw national officer Mark Todd said: “Our priorities are to secure the best available deal for those impacted by these proposals.

“In the meantime, we are providing our members with the support, advice and representation they need at this difficult time.”
