Superdrug is to implement space and category management software in the next six months to increase sales and support its expansion.

The JDA software will be used to optimise item assortment and decision-making on store planning at the retailer’s 913 stores.

In particular, Superdrug expects to increase sales through improved category management and space utilisation. The retailer believes that the system will also increase its speed to market, by supporting brand launches, store openings and store remodels.

Other benefits will include a reduction in manual data processes, which Superdrug expects to allow it to redeploy resources to sales-improving activity. The retailer also anticipates a reduction in inventory costs through targeted item assortment that adjusts to local demand.

JDA’s Efficient Item Assortment, Space Planning, Floor Planning and Intactix Knowledge Base will replace Superdrug’s existing space-planning system.

The implementation is taking place as Superdrug positions itself as the “leading fashion-led health and beauty retailer on the UK high street”, in a five-year plan.

Superdrug trading director Jeff Wemyss said: “We need to make our stores easier to shop in for our customers and ensure that we have the right product mix for their beauty and health needs. JDA’s analytical, consumer-centric solutions will enable us to do this.”

JDA’s space management software suite is in use by Superdrug’s competitor Boots, where it has been integrated with a replenishment system. Boots has cited an increase in sales of between 1 and 2 per cent and an on-shelf availability rate of above 97 per cent thanks to the system.
