While attending NRF 2024: Retail’s Big Show in New York, Retail Week took a walk down the city’s most famous shopping street to take the temperature of some of retail’s finest flagships

In a city where everything is famously bigger and better, retail giants including Nike, Uniqlo and Sephora certainly live up to expectations with their presence on Fifth Avenue.

A noticeable feature across the stores was the localisation, with US- and NYC-focused imagery and themes running through the store design and product offers set to attract locals and tourists alike.

Housing luxury brands including Chanel, Dior, Gucci and Chloé, Saks Off 5th offers a personalised shopper experience with a huge product selection on offer for customers.

Italian lingerie brand Intimissimi also presents an elegant aesthetic on Fifth Avenue, spanning three floors for customers to both shop and dine. The Intimissimi cafe on the first floor follows a ground floor offering its bestselling and new ranges, and the lower floor is dedicated to tights, trousers and other accessories.

The scale of H&M’s Fifth Avenue flagship was impressive with a huge amount of floor space to showcase its latest collections across womenswear, menswear, sport, accessories and childrenswear. The store also had a recycling box next to the tills encouraging shoppers to recycle old clothing in exchange for points via the H&M membership scheme.

With in-store services including makeup application, skincare treatments and waxing available in-store while you shop, Sephora’s flagship creates even more incentives for customers to walk through the doors. With beauty advisers on hand to offer a free foundation shade test, the beauty giant has mastered the in-store experience in New York.

Sports giants Puma, Nike and Lululemon all have spaces within their stores solely for footwear and provide product recommendations on displays to guide customers in the right direction.

Of the sports giants, Nike’s flagship was the most impressive. Described by the brand its ‘House of Innovation’, Nike has floors dedicated solely to womenswear, menswear, the Sneakerlab footwear space, its Jordan basketball range and the Nike By You personalisation service.
