• Aldi has signed a 20-year lease on a former BHS site in Edinburgh
  • Primark is in talks to take on its fourth former BHS unit
  • Poundworld is close to agreeing terms on a former BHS store in London

A swathe of discount retailers including Aldi and Poundworld have taken on or are close to agreeing deals on former BHS units.

Discount grocer Aldi has signed a 20-year lease on the 20,000 sq ft BHS unit in Cameron Toll Shopping Centre in Edinburgh, the first of the department store chain’s former stores in Scotland to be re-let.

According to Property Week, Aldi is one of many discount retailers to have agreed or be close to signing deals on prior BHS sites.

Poundworld is in the process of agreeing terms on the department store chain’s former outlet on Wood Green High Street in London, while its store in Bristol’s Broadmead will be split between TK Maxx and Metro Bank.

There is speculation that discount department store TJ Hughes is offering to snap up 10 former BHS sites across the UK, while Primark is understood to be in talks to take on a BHS outlet in St Ann’s Shopping Centre in Harrow.

If that deal goes through, it would add to the three former BHS units that Primark has taken leases on in Colchester, Reading and Carlisle.

Retailers including Next and The Range have also taken on sites across BHS’s 164 former stores across the UK in recent months.

Earlier this week, Edinburgh Woollen Mill Group was revealed to be planning a new department store format in a former BHS outlet in Wales.
