Made.com has rolled out a search tool that will allow shoppers to find items on its website using images rather than search terms.

The pure-play retailer has installed the visual search engine – powered by technology from Hullabalook, which is backed by private equity firm Truestart – in the hope of speeding up the online shopping experience for customers.

The new search tool, dubbed the ‘Sofasizer’, enables customers to check that furniture is the right size and colour for their home before ordering it, further negating the need to visit a physical store before making a purchase.

The furniture etailer hopes the tool will reduce the likelihood of frustrated shoppers leaving the site and convert more browsers to buyers, while enriching its customer data.

Ease of search

Made.com chief technology officer Jonathan Howell said: “As our range grows, we are particularly interested in making sure customers can find the right product for them as quickly and easily as possible.

”We worked closely with Hullabalook to create a simple and elegant solution for people who have a specific space in mind for their sofa and want to make sure they buy something that fits.”

Made is the first retailer to use the retail start-up’s technology, described as a cross between Shazam and Pinterest, and said it received positive feedback during a trial phase.

Hullabalook co-founder Bryony Elliott said: “Finding products on retailer websites is much harder than it needs to be.

”Hullabalook aims to make any product findable in seconds by understanding what is really important to shoppers when they are making purchases.”
