Government is under pressure after it was revealed Morrisons were given more than 10% of the people eligible for its apprenticeship scheme last year.
A BBC Panorama show, set to air tonight, alleges that apprentices now make up more than 40% of Morrisons’ workforce under the Government’s £1.4bn apprenticeship scheme.
Ministers face questions over why more than one in 10 of all of the apprenticeships created in England last year were at Morrisons, The Independent reports.
The documentary, entitled The Great Apprentice Scandal, alleges the grocer took on 52,000 placements last year.
The show will also look at training provider One, forward Thinking Training Solutions which received £2.7m in government contracts last year but has since gone into administration.
Morrisons has a strong emphasis on training store staff with specific skills to man its fresh food counters including butchery and bakery.
Chief executive Dalton Philips said last year: “Having skilled people serving customers is vital for Morrisons’ success.”
