Sainsbury's zone managing director Kevin Plant said: 'We have looked closely at our customer needs and although the Meadowhall centre is one of the best fashion retail destinations in the North of England, it doesn't offer the right amount of accessibility and convenience to our customers who purely want to do their weekly food shopping.'
The retailer said it was investing£20 million in a new larger 55,000 sq ft (5,110 sq m) site at the Crystal Peaks Centre Mosborough, which is slated to open in September.
The site replaces a smaller store at Crystal Peaks. Staff from the smaller store will be transferred to the new site.
