Retail use helps Portugal develop Euro 2004 sites

The Portuguese football authorities have delivered 10 new and refurbished stadiums for the Euro 2004 tournament, with 370,000 seats at less than half the projected£750 million cost of the UK's 90,000-seat Wembley Stadium project.

Part of the reason is the creation of retail and commercial leisure space as part of the developments.

In Lisbon, UK architectural practice Broadway Malyan has created a 105,000 sq ft (9, 755 sq m) family entertainment centre and movie lounge at the Sporting Lisbon stadium. Key retailers at the centre include Reebok, Sporting Lisbon's main sponsor, as well as Timberland and Quiksilver.

The centre also comprises a climbing wall, multiplex cinema, bars and restaurants, a bowling alley and an area designed to host live music.
