Retail Property - Plans lodged to extend Shires mall in Leicester

Hammerson and Hermes Property Asset Management have submitted a planning application for a 600,000 sq ft (55,740 sq m) extension to the Shires shopping centre in Leicester.

If approved, it will turn the Shires into a retail destination measuring more than a million sq ft (more than 92,900 sq m), which would rival Birmingham's Bullring and Manchester's Arndale Centre in size.

Plans to extend the centre onto the adjoining Shires West site - which is a car park at the moment - will provide 530,000 sq ft (49,240 sq m) of retail space, 42,000 sq ft (3,900 sq m) of bars and restaurants, 37,000 sq ft (3,440 sq m) of leisure space, 118 residential units and 1,000 parking spaces.

The new phase will be anchored by a 220,000 sq ft (20,440 sq m) four-level department store. No occupier has been named so far, but John Lewis Partnership is not represented in Leicester.

Bullring architect Chapman Taylor has designed the scheme and Donaldsons is advising the developers.
