Tesco.com, Sainsbury's To You and Ocado all enjoyed record Christmas performances because more shoppers sat in front of their PCs rather than running around supermarkets.
John Lewis-backed Ocado delivered 15,000 orders in the seven days to Christmas Eve. The average customer order was worthÂŁ146.25, upÂŁ11 on the previous year. In the last three days to Christmas Eve, Ocado sales were more thanÂŁ1 million - up 300 per cent.
Tesco.com's orders through December climbed to a record-breaking 500,000, and sales were higher in the month than for the whole of 1999.
Sainsbury's To You is understood to have generated sales of more thanÂŁ3.5 million in the week to Christmas Day.
A spokeswoman said that Sainsbury's To You continues to perform well and is on track to break even by the end of the financial year.
