Google will open its online bookstore in Europe next year following its US launch yesterday.
The web giant’s eBookstore opened in the US with over 15 million books available from 35,000 publishers as it aims to challenge Amazon and Apple’s dominance in the e-books market.
All six major US publishers have signed up to eBookstore, including Random House which does not sell on rival Apple store iBookstore. Independent retailers will also be able to use the Google system to sell through their own website.
Books can be bought and read via applications on Google Android software, Apple’s iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch and via a regular web browser, although they will not be compatible with Amazon’s Kindle device.
eBookstore will also launch in Asia next year.
