Online giant Amazon’s tax bill climbed last year, making it one of the biggest tax contributors in the UK.

Amazon paid just over £1.3bn in direct taxes last year – a 20% increase on 2024 – and it paid and collected a total of £6.5bn altogether.
PwC data cited by Amazon UK boss John Boumphrey showed the retailer ranked in the “top five largest UK tax contributors”.
Historically, the level of tax paid by Amazon drew criticism because it was perceived as being too low for a business of its size. Now, the retailer is keen to flag the scale and value of its contribution to taxes and the wider economy.
Posting on LinkedIn, Boumphrey said: “Behind the numbers are people in good jobs, millions of customers getting faster delivery and lower prices, and thousands of small businesses growing across the UK.”
He said Amazon had pledged investment in the UK of £40bn between 2025 and 2027 and added: “One year on, we have invested more than £15bn, launching new operational sites, starting drone deliveries, expanding studio production facilities, as well as opening a new London campus in Shoreditch with expanded office space.”
The retailer has also opened a new development centre in Wales where Veeqo, a shipping and inventory tech start-up acquired by Amazon five years ago, is based.
