Amazon has reached an agreement to acquire fast-growing online bookseller The Book Depository.

Amazon vice president of european retail Greg Greeley said: ““Customers in more than 100 countries enjoy The Book Depository’s vast selection, convenient delivery and free shipping. The Book Depository is very focused on serving its customers around the world, and we look forward to welcoming them to the Amazon family.”

The Book Depository, founded by Andrew Crawford in 2004, is expected to record £120m sales for its year ending June 30. Sales surged 70% to £60m in its first half.

Crawford said: “With the support of Amazon, we look forward to continuing our growth and providing an ever-improving service for readers globally.”

The deal will be online giant Amazon’s second major acquisition of the year, after it snapped up DVD rental specialist Lovefilm.
