Simba has achieved B Corp status, becoming the first UK-based sleep brand to earn the accreditation, according to the business.

The mattress brand said the accreditation marked a major milestone on its road to becoming net zero by 2030 and was a recognition of its drive to improve its standards of environmental and social sustainability.

Non-profit B Lab UK uses a benchmarking process to verify that businesses are meeting high social and environmental standards before awarding the certification. There are more than 1,000 B Corp-certified companies in the UK including Graze, Abel & Cole and The Body Shop. Simba joins the likes of Lick and ProCook as newly accredited brands within the UK homeware and DIY sector.

Simba chief executive and founder Steve Reid said: “Successful submissions need to score 80 or higher to pass B Corp status. Simba received 97.5 in the assessment of its environmental and social impact – an achievement of which we are incredibly proud.

“B Corp involves a rigorous process that placed our entire business model under the microscope, from a deep dive into our supply chain, to reviewing our approach to ethical innovation in new product development.

“In addition to the environment, accreditation also involves scrutinising governance and areas such as worker wellness and development, diversity, customer stewardship and community-related charitable projects.

“We set up an internal team and through this journey, we’ve implemented lots of changes across the organisation. But there is still work to be done.”

The brand produces its products in zero-waste factories, which use energy from renewable sources. Simba has pledged that by the end of 2023, at least 50% of the materials it uses will be from recycled sources.
