Danish furniture and home furnishings chain Jysk has recorded a surge in full-year sales despite lockdown restrictions as the retailer gears up to increase its UK store footprint by half.

The Scandinavian homewares retailer reported a 67% rise in total sales across the UK and Ireland to €68.9m (£58.5m) in its 2020-21 financial year, driven by a 30% increase in shopper numbers to 1.1 million.

Jysk, which operates 37 stores across the UK and Ireland, said it had reported “positive EBIT” over the financial year despite extensive lockdowns during the period.

The homeware and furniture retailer, which operates more than 3,000 stores across 50 countries, plans to open a further 14 stores across the UK and Ireland in its upcoming financial year.

Jysk’s UK and Ireland country manager Roni Tuominen said: “While it has been another tough year for retail in many ways, we are very pleased with the results of our continued investment in growing Jysk’s geographical – and digital – footprint.

“In Ireland, we were able to contribute positive EBIT for our second financial year in the row. In the UK, we have contributed positive EBIT for the first time, which is a huge achievement considering five out of 12 months our stores were closed.

“We are very confident in both the UK and Ireland market, and we will continue with our expansion plans over the next 12 months. The appetite is there for home furnishing products among our customers, perhaps now more than ever as the nation continues to spend more time at home and invest in creating comfortable, ‘hygge’ inspired interiors that are synonymous with our Danish heritage.”
