Anya Hindmarch, the designer of handbags and small leather goods, has opened the first of two London stores on Bond Street.

The 1,500 sq ft (140 sq m) three-floor shop has been designed by Found Associates and is intended to draw on old-fashioned haberdashery fit-outs. With this in mind, the ground floor has large numbers of mirror-fronted drawers along the left-hand side and the centre floor has dark-wood museum-style display cabinets. Overhead, an extended oval light fitting is recessed into the ceiling and the floor uses black and white marble tiling arranged in a harlequin pattern.

The bulk of the ground floor is devoted to handbags, with a small shoe department at the far end. In addition to the glazed drawers on the perimeter, mirrors are deployed across all three floors, to create the illusion of depth in this deep, but narrow shop.

Downstairs, the smaller basement floor has the same fixtures and fittings and is used to house some of the bespoke pieces that are available. The first floor has yet to be stocked, but comprises several connected rooms.

The second Anya Hindmarch flagship, a 2,000 sq ft (185 sq ft) store, is due to open on Sloane Street at the beginning of December. This is part of an 18-store global roll-out, due for completion by early 2008.

Anya Hindmarch worked with Sainsbury’s in April this year to produce the£5 “I am not a plastic bag” shopper, which sold out as it hit the supermarket’s shelves. The average selling price in the Bond Street store is about£500 and a bespoke crocodile bag is on sale for£6,500.
