The Body Shop has been sold by L’Oréal for £880m. Retail Week takes a closer look at the beauty retailer’s new owners, Natura Cosméticos.

• The cosmetics manufacturer was founded in 1969 in São Paulo by Luiz Seabra, who still sits on the company’s board

• Natura is one of Brazil’s most valuable consumer groups – it has said that after integrating The Body Shop into its operations, it will have a combined turnover of approximately $3.5bn (£2.7bn), with 3,200 stores and 17,000 employees worldwide

• Natura currently employs 7,000 staff and manufactures and sells its cosmetics ranges in seven countries including Brazil, Argentina, Columbia, Mexico and France

• Natura has been on the acquisition trail to bolster its place in the international beauty market in recent years, and snapped up luxury beauty brand Aesop in 2013.

• The business has a keen focus on ethical beauty – it sources much of its material from the Amazon rainforest and was ranked the world’s second most committed business to sustainable development at the 2016 World Economics Forum in Davos.

• As well as selling through its own ecommerce platform and stores, Natura Cosmeticos sells wholesale through Amazon, Birchbox and La Redoute.

• Natura’s current own-brand offer covers haircare, fragrance and skincare products spanning across five different brands – Natura Brasil Ekos, Natura Brasil Chronos, Mãma e Bebê, Natura Tododia and Crer Para Ver.

• Natura has become a beauty staple in the Latin American middle market, but chief executive João Paulo Ferreira said its acquisition of The Body Shop “is a decisive step in making Natura Group an international player in the cosmetics industry”.

• Natura stopped animal testing for its products in 2003.

• Ferreira said that their mutual focus on ethical beauty makes The Body Shop and Natura Cosmetics natural bedfellows: “In a sense, Natura and The Body Shop are like twins. We both share a same vision of cosmetics, advocating the use of natural ingredients, seeking to use our business as a platform to raise environmental consciousness.”
