Upmarket furniture retailer Heal’s is in negotiations with the landlord of its Manchester store to exit the site, after disappointing sales and a decision to focus more on its online arm.
Heal’s wants to close its 27,000 sq ft store on Manchester’s New Cathedral Street in spring. It is unclear if the shop will shut if negotiations with the landlord are not successful.
The closure would leave Heal’s trading from six shops, including its flagship on London’s Tottenham Court Road.
Heal’s chief executive Andrea Warden said the closure is part of the retailer’s plans to “strengthen performance overall and focus on expansion of the brand through Heals.co.uk”. She added that current trading in all its other stores is “encouraging and ahead of budget”.
Warden said Heal’s had invested in a website redesign resulting in “unprecedented growth. With this in mind, we’ve had to make the difficult decision to close our Manchester branch, which wasn’t performing to expectations”.
