Harrods has almost completed the construction of its Heathrow Terminal 5 store, which will open in March.

The 18,000 sq ft (1,670 sq m) shop, designed by Fitch, is at the centre of the new terminal and has an 82m-long open front. It is 24m wide at its deepest point.

The space features two dome areas, one each for men’s and women’s fashions. Each measures 10m in diameter and 5m at its highest point. Internally, the domes are studded with hundreds of LED lights that can be programmed to form patterns or change colour according to mood, season or product promotion.

The store is a distinct departure from airport retailing norms, with highly polished white fixturing and extensive use of plasma screens that have been built into the walls, rather than added after construction.

The Harrods logo has also been changed for this store: in place of the familiar green and gold brand, the name has been presented using a series of fibre-optic rods. There is a void in the middle of the shop, where escalators take shoppers to and from World Duty Free on the floor below.

Harrods in T5 is well-positioned, being the first commercial enterprise that travellers will encounter after they pass through security and emerge onto the terminal’s airside upper level.
