Guess? returns to UK with store in Covent Garden

US denim brand Guess? is relaunching in the UK, four years after closing shop.

The brand will open a licensed store on Neal Street in London's Covent Garden in September.

Peter Gold, director of client strategy at property firm Dalgleish, said he has worked closely with Guess? to help find the right store. 'This will be a strengthening of the Guess? brand in the UK,' he said.

The shop will be controlled by a joint venture with Italian manufacturer and distributor Fingen.

Guess? used to have two London stores - on Brompton Road and New Bond Street - but they closed down after a joint venture with retail entrepreneur Christina Ong broke down.

In 2003, Guess? swung into net earnings of US$7.3 million (£4 million) compared with a loss of US$11.3 million (£6.2 million) a year earlier.

The retailer has 265 own-managed stores in the US and Canada, as well as 232 licensed stores around the world. Guess? will launch its first own-brand fragrance in mid-2005.
