The latest iteration of the grocer’s SmartShop app is being trialled in its convenience store branch in Clapham North.

The pilot is an evolution of its existing SmartShop proposition, which allows shoppers to scan items using handheld devices across 68 of its branches before paying at a till.

However, Sainsbury’s latest pilot has been heralded by chief digital officer Clodagh Moriarty as the first time a UK grocer retailer has offered “customers the ability to shop checkout-free.”
