The latest iteration of the grocer’s SmartShop app is being trialled in its convenience store branch in Clapham North.
The pilot is an evolution of its existing SmartShop proposition, which allows shoppers to scan items using handheld devices across 68 of its branches before paying at a till.
However, Sainsbury’s latest pilot has been heralded by chief digital officer Clodagh Moriarty as the first time a UK grocer retailer has offered “customers the ability to shop checkout-free.”
So does the technology work and will it enable shoppers to complete their shop quicker and more easily that they would queuing at a till? Retail Week puts the app through its pace to find out.
