Tesco is trialling a plethora of new technology from electronic shelf barkers to smart badges to be worn by staff.

The grocer tested electronic pricing on its shelves which allows it to update its prices minute-by-minute in Romford last year.

Chief information officer Mike McNamara said the company is working on a number of new technologies and will roll out electronic shelf barkers in Hungary.

With a focus on the fresh produce department, McNamara unveiled its ‘Broccoli Cam’ which surveys its produce aisle and alerts staff when trays are empty.

Tesco is also working with developers to extend the use of augmented reality on mobile apps.

McNamara said: “Every week at Tesco we change between five and 10 million labels and that’s an awful lot of labels. The future is electronic shelf edge labels that we have developed using the same technology as the Amazon Kindle.”
