Asda has invested £1m in transforming its Grantham superstore, as boss Andy Clarke bids to move the grocer’s proposition to “where the customer is going.”

The Lincolnshire superstore has undergone the extensive refit, which took eight weeks to complete, along with another site in Coventry.

Eight more Asda superstores are lined up for similar refurbishment, which could eventually be rolled out to Asda’s entire superstore estate – a move that would cost an estimated £170m.

Grantham’s new-look Asda features an addition 8% of floor space dedicated to fresh food, health and wellbeing, including 35% more space for shoppers in the fruit and vegetable aisles.

Asda’s trademark ‘make your own pizza’ counter has doubled in size, while space dedicated to gluten free products has increased three-fold to include gluten free bread baked in store – a first for UK grocery.

It’s George Home offer has been pushed towards the front of the store, with George fashion getting a modern facelift to create the feel of a “high street destination”.

There’s also a new in-store restaurant offering what chief executive Clarke calls “an affordable treat”, with 25 options including hot dogs, salads and pizzas spread across separate breakfast and lunch menus, all for just £1 each.
