Sainsbury’s is to widen the trial of its Chop Chop mobile app this week, as it eyes other areas of London in its ongoing fulfilment drive.

The supermarket giant, which completed its £1.4bn takeover of Argos earlier this month, is expanding its one-hour delivery offer across a further 35,699 postcodes in central London this week via its Chop Chop mobile app.

The grocer, which initially launched the trial for shoppers living in Wandsworth in June, will fulfil orders from customers using the app from its Pimlico and Wandsworth stores.

Forty new packer and delivery cyclists roles have been created.

Shoppers can order up to 20 items and pay £4.99 for the service. If any products are not available in store a member of staff will call about supplying a substitute before delivery.

Director of digital and technology Jon Rudoe said: “Speed of delivery is important to some customers, so we have brought back our bicycle service to test demand further.

“In Wandsworth customers are using the new one-hour delivery service to buy forgotten items, or emergency goods when they cannot leave their home, or have invited guests on the spur of the moment.

“If it proves popular we might introduce it to other areas of London.”

Sainsbury’s extended delivery pilot comes after the supermarket unveiled a dedicated London fulfilment centre earlier this month to meet rising online grocery demand.
