Sainsbury’s boss Mike Coupe faces another three week-wait to find out the result of his appeal against a prison sentence in Egypt.
Coupe’s appeal against a two-year jail term for embezzlement was heard in Giza yesterday, but a Sainsbury’s spokeswoman told Retail Week that a judgement would not be made until June 11.
It means the bizarre legal case, which dates back to Sainsbury’s failed foray into Egypt 16 years ago, will drag on for another three weeks.
As previously reported, Coupe was convicted in absentia back in September after allegedly attempting to seize cheques from local partner Amr El Nasharty, who brought Sainsbury’s remaining shares in the doomed venture when it withdrew from Egypt in 2001.
Sainsbury’s has vehemently denied the allegations, which it labelled as “groundless.”
Coupe has insisted it is “business as usual” for him despite having the sentence hanging over his head.
