Morrisons has invested £15m into cutting the prices of over 200 popular products to help customers “through the January squeeze”.

The grocer said the 200-plus products had been cut by an average of 20% and included cupboard essentials and breakfast options, as well as fresh produce to “help people have a nutritious and healthy start to the year”.

Some of the biggest reductions are on products such as Morrisons washing up liquid, reduced from 75p to 59p, a five-pack of bananas from 99p to 78p, 1kg of Morrisons brown basmati rice from £2.99 to £1.85, and a 400g can of chopped tomatoes from 60p to 49p.

The new investment means Morrisons has now lowered and locked the prices of over 1,000 items for next eight weeks from December 27, to help make customers’ budgets stretch further.

Rachel Eyre, chief customer and marketing officer at Morrisons, said: “We know that January can be a difficult month for many after enjoying the festive season, so we wanted to do all we can to keep prices low without any compromise on quality. Whether it’s helping our customers with ingredients for nutritious meals or making it easier for them to stock up on toiletries, we are starting the new year as we finished the last one – with a real focus on meaningful price cuts across all areas of our stores.”
