Store staff at Morrisons are facing increased monitoring from management following the introduction of an app that records how long staff take to replenish stock.

The new system, which is being deployed by store managers, allows the supermarket to monitor workers’ performance in real-time and identify which employees are quicker or slower at stocking shelves on an ongoing basis.

Previously, such data was held by Morrisons’ head office and shared with managers quarterly. However, the app now provides managers with continuous updates on underperforming staff members.

The supermarket said the system was designed to “help teams understand their own performance” and would allow it to be “fair and consistent in recognising colleagues”.

The new technology, which was first reported by The Telegraph, allows managers to log employees’ speed and measure it against allocated targets, as part of a broader push within Morrisons to raise store standards.

Earlier this year, The Telegraph revealed the retailer had told “idling” shop floor staff they would no longer have access to stockrooms, mandating which employees are permitted in supermarket backrooms to improve customer service. Morrisons said the changes would ensure it had “the right colleagues in the right place to deliver the best service to customers at all times”.
