Discounter giant Lidl has announced that it is launching a new self-scanning feature for customers which will be integrated fully in its loyalty app Lidl Plus.

The retailer said that it would begin testing the new feature from September in a “family and friends trial across four stores”, ahead of a phased rollout of the technology in 2026.

Lidl said the feature will “allow customers to scan products as they shop, track spending and savings in real time, and complete their purchases quickly at a self-checkout terminal – all through the existing Lidl Plus app”.

The rollout of the new feature is part of the the discounter’s “long-term investment into technology and investment”, which includes launching the pilot of its click, reserve and collect service through the Plus app earlier this year, as well as rolling out self-checkouts across its store estate.

Chief executive Ryan McDonnell said: “This marks a significant leap forward in our digital evolution. Integrated into Lidl Plus, it’s designed to offer customers a smarter, faster, and more flexible way to shop.

“We’re investing heavily in technologies that simplify everyday life, while always offering our customers different options to suit their shopping preferences. Whether customers prefer the traditional checkout, self-service or self scanning, at Lidl, they are always in control of how they shop.”
