Tesco has launched a range of everyday products in reusable packaging in partnership with platform Loop.

Products including pasta, nuts and laundry detergent will be available to purchase in glass and stainless steel containers.

The trial includes 88 product lines – 53 branded, and 35 own-brand items – and will begin in 10 stores in the east of England.

Tesco has partnered with brands such as Unilever-owned Persil, Fever-Tree, Brewdog and Tetley to offer a variety of products in the new packaging.

Tackling the problem of plastic packaging

The Loop range is offered pre-filled in a container designed for the product type – unlike trials done with retailers such as Asda where the customer brings their own containers to refill in store.

Each product is purchased with a 20p deposit, which is refunded via an app when the customer returns the packaging to the Loop drop off point in store.

Loop then takes care of cleaning the packaging to an industrial standard, before it is refilled by either Tesco or the brand and sold back on store shelves.

Tesco said that if shoppers swapped just three items in their weekly shop to the reusable alternative, they would save 2.5 million pieces of plastic packaging from being created and disposed of.

The retailer is looking to widen the trial to include more products and more stores by the end of the year.

Tesco chief executive Ken Murphy said: “We are determined to tackle plastic waste and one of the ways we can help is by improving reuse options available to customers. Bringing Loop to our stores is a significant milestone in this journey.

“With 88 everyday products available, we’re giving customers a wide range of options and we’ll learn as much as we can from this to inform our future packaging plans.”
