Former BP and Boots executive Tracey Clements has taken up a new role at grocery giant Sainsbury’s, as part of a wider shake-up of the supermarket chain’s senior team.

Clements will join Sainsbury’s on September 3 as its new chief retail, logistics and supply officer – a newly created role that the grocer said “unifies retail, digital, customer experience, supply chain and logistics under a single leadership”.
Sainsbury’s said Clements was a “highly experienced leader with a proven track record in grocery, bringing broad and deep experience across retail operations, convenience retail, strategy, loyalty and marketing and customer service”.
She started her retail career at Tesco, where she worked for 17 years, including as managing director of Tesco Express and chief executive of One Stop.
She then joined Boots as chief operating officer, before joining BP as senior vice president of mobility and convenience for Europe.
Mark Given has been promoted to chief technology, marketing and data officer; Rhian Bartlett has been named chief commercial and sustainability officer; Rob Barnes will join as chief technology officer in early October, having previously worked at Asda and Marks & Spencer, while Argos retail and transformation teams have been placed under Graham Biggart.
Chief executive Simon Roberts said: “I’m delighted to welcome Tracey to our operating board. Her breadth of experience, energy and customer-first mindset make her an outstanding addition to our leadership team. I’m confident she will play a pivotal role in accelerating our plan and shaping the next chapter of our Sainsbury’s business.
“Alongside Tracey, we’re strengthening our leadership across technology, commercial and sustainability, all areas that are critical to delivering our Next Level strategy. With Rhian taking forward our combined commercial and sustainability ambition, Mark uniting technology, marketing and data, Graham leading our group strategy and the transformation of Argos, and Rob joining us as CTO, we’re building the momentum and the capabilities to move faster, serve customers better and unlock long-term growth across the group.”
Clements added: “Sainsbury’s is an amazing brand with a deep heritage at the heart of Britain’s relationship with food. I’ve always held it in high regard for giving customers extremely high-quality food at great value, with a real focus on colleagues, communities, suppliers and farmers. I can’t wait to get started and help shape the next chapter of this fantastic business.”
