Asda was the only major supermarket to see its sales fall ahead of the crucial Christmas trading period.

Data from Wordpanel shows the supermarket’s market share dropped 0.9 percentage points to 11.5% as sales dropped 4.3% in the 12 weeks to November 30.

Tesco and Sainsbury’s both enjoyed a 0.3 percentage point increase in market share as sales rose 4.7% and 5.1% respectively.

Aldi’s market share held steady at 10.5%, despite a 4.1% rise in sales.

Meanwhile, Ocado remained the UK’s fastest-growing supermarket as revenues jumped 15.8% in the quarter. Lidl followed closely behind, delivering a 10.2% increase.

It comes as consumers are forecast to splurge over £13.6bn on food and drink in December, driven partly by an uptick in promotional activity across the sector.

Worldpanel head of retail and consumer insight Fraser McKevitt said: “Retailers are pulling out all the stops to win shoppers over as they gear up for one of the most important trading periods of the year.

“One in five households tells us that they’ve been struggling financially and that’s been largely consistent over the past two years.

“With the cost of living still biting for many this Christmas, just under one third of all spending is on promotion as supermarkets find ways to shield shoppers from the impact of price rises.”
