Poundland has hired Tesco director Andrew Higginson as non-executive chairman.

Higginson, who it was revealed last week will join home shopping group N Brown as chairman in September, will take over from Colin Smith OBE, who will move to non-executive director of Poundland

Higginson, who was group finance and strategy director at Tesco for 11 years before taking on the role of head of retailing services, revealed his retirement from the grocer at the end of last year.

Higginson said: “I am excited to be joining Poundland as chairman and look forward to working with Jim [McCarthy, chief executive of Poundland] and the team as the company continues its ambitious growth strategy.  The company has always impressed me with its focus on delivering value to customers and I believe that there is significant potential to develop and grow Poundland further.”

McCarthy said: “His strategic skills and retail experience will be invaluable as we continue to grow our business in the UK and Ireland, and evaluate a number of other growth opportunities.”
