According to a survey from insight agency Opinium, £2.1bn is expected to be added to the UK economy today as a result of the increased demand over Boxing Day.

Some 23% of adults surveyed are planning to opt for online shopping over visiting physical stores. More than two thirds of Gen Zs and millennials are searching for bargains this year, with jeans, coats and trainers most in demand in this age range.

The survey showed the demand for oversized styles remains and that consumers are also opting for items in bright colours.

The return of socialising has also transformed what consumers were searching for on the Asos site in 2021.

According to the Asos Trend Report for this year, lipstick sales rose, while demand for black trousers increased 30% in the second half of the year.

The pureplay retail giant said it sold a pair of high heels every 13 seconds on its website in the latter half of 2021 as consumers prepared to head out on the town.

Asos also gained a foothold in the wedding market, with 1.5 million wedding and bridesmaids dresses sold in 113 countries, and recorded sales of 100,000 complete suits, with demand for men’s formal shoes up 80%.

The influence of television shows also drove Asos sales in 2021. Love Island contestant Millie Court, who previously worked at the online retailer before winning the reality show, was chosen as the brand’s latest ambassador.

Meanwhile, sales of varsity jackets rose after the latest season of Sex Education aired in the autumn.
