Sainsbury’s is to start selling its Tu clothing range through Argos as the grocer bids to ramp up the fashion brand’s online presence.

The supermarket giant said Argos would start stocking the full Tu proposition from “sometime in April”.

The fashion range will be available for next day delivery on all orders placed through the Argos website before 2pm, although shoppers will not be able to receive items on the same day through its Fast Track fulfilment service.

The move by Sainsbury’s to beef up Tu’s online presence comes less than three years after it launched a standalone Tu clothing website.

The fashion brand is currently the sixth largest in the UK by sales volumes, but only accounts for around a 2% share of the congested clothing market.

Sainsbury’s Argos boss John Rogers refused to put a target on how much of its clothing the business hopes to sell through Argos, but said: “Tu sales in total are roughly £1bn and we would expect that next year just under 10% would be online. That will be a combination of our existing Tu online offer and Tu at Argos.”

He added: “If you look at online, it’s growing rapidly. There was never a stronger demarcation over Christmas between the winners and losers in clothing than those who had a really credible online offer.

“That’s why we are investing in that online offer. We are starting from a low base – just under 10% of our sales are online – but that’s growing at roughly 35% or 40% year-on-year, so this will help that penetration increase.”
