Primark is set to pay out three months’ wages to factory employees or dependents of those impacted by the Rana Plaza factory collapse as part of its short-term assistance plans.
The budget retailer said it has almost completed registering about 4,000 employees or dependents of the Rana Plaza building. In a process that has been agreed with IndustriALL Bangladesh Council, the retailer will give the equivalent of almost three months’ wages to all the factory’s employees or dependents.
Primark said in a statement: “The vast majority of these employees made clothes for retail brands other than Primark.”
It added: “This short term assistance recognises that the process to establish long-term compensation will take time, in order to ensure the payments are made to the appropriate beneficiaries, and that individuals considered to be vulnerable are supported appropriately.”
The eight-storey Rana Plaza building collapsed on April 24, killing more than 1,000 people. Retailers including Primark, Bonmarche and Joe Fresh used suppliers in the building.
