JD Sports said it is “pleased” with its performance as the sports retailer revealed the build up to the World Cup boosted like-for-like sales.

JD Sports declined to give like-for-like figures for the 18 weeks to June 7 as it said they would be “potentially misleading” owing to the World Cup effect, which it said had “enhanced” the trading performance of its sports fascias.

The sports retailer added: “We are pleased with the underlying performance of this segment in the period to date.”

It added that its outdoor business, which includes Blacks, has been making positive progress against last year and “there are encouraging signs for the future”.

JD expects first-half profitability to be in line with expectations.

The World Cup football tournament kicked off on June 12.
