DSGi claims to have cut paper use by 4 million sheets and cut CO2 emissions by 93 tonnes a year since switching to Lexmark’s managed printing service two years ago.

As part of a Green Week event last week, DSGi invited Lexmark to present to 1,500 head office employees and give advice on how staff could cut their environmental impact further.

DSGi said that, as well as cutting paper use and CO2 emissions, Lexmark’s power save system reduces the energy a printer uses after 15 minutes on stand-by.

DSGi corporate responsibility manager Clare Brine said: “We are extremely supportive of suppliers that share our dedication to protecting the environment. In addition to reducing the amount of paper and energy we consume, Lexmark has helped us cut the quantity of toner we use by an estimated 2,500 cartridges a year.

“We have also signed up to Lexmark’s toner recycling programme, which ensures that every cartridge we consume is reused.”

Lexmark UK printing services and solutions division head of marketing Raj Meghani said that, at the presentation, the print jobs that no one had collected the previous Friday had been stacked up to demonstrate how much more staff could reduce printing.

Employees were issued with tip cards, with advice such as making use of duplex printing, scanning to e-mail and print preview to minimise wastage.

DSGi’s staff were also invited to enter a competition to estimate the CO2 saved after being given details of the methodology used to calculate it. About 200 entered and eight came up with the correct answer.

Lexmark was the only technology vendor invited by DSGi to participate in the event. Other organisations involved in the Green Week were the Energy Saving Trust, Eco Schools, BTCV and local farmers.
