Garden centre group aims to develop retail strategy
Dobbies Garden Centres has appointed former B&Q manager Gordon Mackenzie as director of retail. The position was created as Dobbies ups its emphasis on the retailing element of its proposition.

Mackenzie was regional warehouse manager for the North at B&Q. As a member of the management board, he will have responsibility for all aspects of retail operations at the company, with the exception of food products. He will report directly to Dobbies operations director Johnny Trotter

Since floating on AIM in 1997, Dobbies has doubled its number of garden centres from nine to 18. The retailer concentrates on sites of more than 8 acres (3.24 ha).

Chief executive James Barnes (pictured) said: 'Dobbies aims to offer customers a unique experience, providing an excellent day out that appeals to the whole family. The retail aspect of this is an integral part of our strategy going forward.'
