John Lewis has seen a surge of interest in Christmas products compared with last year

A recent survey carried out by John Lewis found that 28% of customers are browsing and purchasing Christmas gifts as early as August.

Customer searches for tree decorations are reportedly up 33% year on year while wrapping paper searches are up 466% and crackers are up 400%.

Searches for artificial trees have also doubled compared with the same period last year.

The department store retailer also said a Google report looking at Christmas peak insight showed that as many as 30% of John Lewis shoppers had completed their Christmas shopping by the end of October, while 72% of shoppers had researched their purchases online before buying.

Christmas searches online at Waitrose have also reached a record of 193% higher than last year, with mince pies and Christmas pudding products being the most popular with shoppers.

John Lewis Christmas buyer Lisa Cherry said: “This year’s themes are inspired by the magic of nostalgia and the enchantment of Christmas. The brilliant in-house design team has taken inspiration from our archives, giving treasured vintage prints a new lease of life across a number of festive products.

“We’re really excited for our customers to explore the new themes and plan ahead for the festive season. Our customers come to John Lewis for all their Christmas needs, with searches already soaring over summer for Christmas jumpers (+133%) and hampers (+250%), and we are looking forward to helping our customers find the perfect gifts and decorations.”

John Lewis also revealed it would be going “bigger and better” in its stores this year with the introduction of a new in-store Santa experience “aimed at children of all ages”.

Shoppers can also expect to find food and alcohol experiences across the Hendrick’s, Fever-Tree, Kocktail and Quality Street brands in a selection of John Lewis stores.
