Any hopes that consumers were saving their spending for Black Friday seem to have been unfounded, putting added pressure on the run-up to Christmas

Given the slowdown in retail sales volumes in October, hopes were high that widespread discounting in November could have added some momentum into golden quarter spending. Three data reads out this week confirm that consumer caution continued through the penultimate month of the year.
