Some Easter noise continues in the first signs of how sales fared last month, but there is evidence that the conflict in the Middle East has rattled consumers and potentially slowed sales
The April numbers in the BRC-KPMG sales monitor and the Barclays consumer card spending figures this month look pretty bad. The former showed a 3% decrease in retail sales for the four weeks to May 2, 2026, versus the year before, while the latter showed retail card spending declining by 0.7% (the Barclays figures were for March 30 to April 26).
