Carrefour is considering going it alone in India following its failure to find a suitable partner to set up a joint venture in the country.

The supermarket giant is expected to make its market debut in the country with a wholesale operation that will begin trading late next year or early 2009.

Carrefour is one of a number of foreign retailers mulling the possibility of kick-starting operations in India, where any multi-category retailer entering the country is legally required to join forces with a local partner. Wholesaling is excluded from this restriction.
