Carphone Warehouse founder Charles Dunstone has put his backing behind maverick pop-up mall Boxpark which opens on Saturday.

The mobile phone tycoon has helped fund the 60 unit development set in shipping containers in Shoreditch, London.  Fashion brands such as Nike, Levi’s and Lacoste have set up shop in the 40 sq ft units.

Dunstone said: “In an environment when everyone is gloomy about the consumer, this shows if you have vision and imagination you can create something that people want to go to.”

Dunstone’s investment will help expand Boxpark to new locations. Founder of the venture, Boxfresh entrepreneur Roger Wade plans to roll-out the scheme to another London-based location. He expects the new scheme to be double the size of Boxpark Shoreditch and it should open before next Christmas.

Wade is also scouting out locations in Manchester and Birmingham.

The scheme is also set to launch overseas following a tie up with property firm Corio which is its European franchise partner and investor. Wade said the scheme is likely to make its European debut in Amsterdam.
