There’s been a branch of Calvin Klein Jeans at Bluewater for about a decade - making it part of the original line-up at the Kentish mall. And although it still looks perfectly respectable, any retail fit-out that is 10 years old will inevitably show its age, if only because fashions come and go in retail interiors.

Now things have been put to rights and a new store interior has been unveiled that brings the brand into line with the best in the casual jeans-based clothing sector. As might be hoped, bearing in mind the name above the door, jeans are to the fore once inside the shop and the watchwords are polished and steel. This is 2,800 sq ft of slick metropolitan store design in which 25% of the sales come from a semi-designer jeans range that starts at £95 and rises to an aspirational £195, but then this is Bluewater, perhaps the most aspirational out-of-town shopping centre in the UK.

That other major constituent of the Calvin Klein Jeans offer - its underwear ranges for men and women - occupies close to a third of the space, taking up the rear portion of the shop. When this is coupled with the extensive use of neutral matt varnish wood for parts of the perimeter and the area above the cash desk, you have a good-looking modern store.

Since the refurbishment, which was completed about two months ago, like-for-like sales have risen at the store by more than 15%, according to retail manager for the UK and Ireland Scott Wakefield, and proof that a better looking interior can bring home the bacon.

In total there are just three standalone Calvin Klein Jeans stores in the UK, a pity really.
