Blinds are driving the overall window furnishings and accessories market, posing stronger competition to curtains. The sector has benefited from the growing trend for simple casual décor in the home.

However, shutters are growing fast too. Although they account for just 5 per cent of the market (£23 million), sales rose 44 per cent between 2004 and 2006 alone. By contrast, sales of curtains have remained static at£640 million, with value sales increasing by just 2 per cent over the same period.

'The past five years have seen a rapid renaissance of shutters, a traditional window furnishing that is finding a new popularity in today's homes,' said Mintel market analyst Vivianne Ihekweazu.

Their rising popularity is caused by a trend of maximising of space in the housing sector. Glass extensions and conservatories as well as loft conversions mean that blinds are the most appropriate option.
